Gem's Fraction Scribepost

Textbook pages 228-229

If you still don't understand how to divide fractions, watch this video!

Here is a link to also help you on how to divide fractions: http://www.mathplayground.com/fractions_div.html

My test corrections:

My first mistake on the test was the question.. "Tamar had 1/2 of an apple pie in her refrigerator. She ate 1/4 of this piece of pie. What fraction of a whole pie did she eat?" I did not draw the picture so I did the manipulatives method.

The correct way to answer this question was:

Another question I made a mistake on was the first question on the bottom section.
 - This question asked us to use a question, picture and math to solve the question.
I did the picture, math right but I did not do the question right.

5/6 x 1/2=5/12

I wrote "How many groups of 1/2 goes into 5/6?

The right answer to this question was supposed to be "What is 5/6 groups of 1/2?"

Ryan's Fraction Scribepost

These is how you do number 6 in 227-229. (Sorry if you can't read my writing.)

This is how you do number 5.
This is how you do number 10. Sorry if you can't read this.

Fractions Test Corrections

The one on top is the mistakes I had on the bottom and I forgot to put the questions on my other ones.
The one on the bottom is the mistakes I had on the top.

And I once again sorry if you can't read my writing.

Jessica D's Fraction Scribepost

Textbook pages 228-229

11) In a comedy review, each performer has a 1/4 h slot. How many performers are there in a 2 h show?

To answer this question, I needed to use the manipulatives method. So the answer to this question is 8 performers.

12) It takes 2 1/2 scoops of flour to make one cake. How many cakes do 15 scoops of flour make?

To answer this question you use the same method as the first one shown. The answer to this question would be 6 cakes.

13) Three quarters of a can of apple juice fills six glasses. How many glasses will a whole can of apple juice fill?

As of before, you would use the same method as I used in the first 2. So this answer would be 8 glasses.

Well here is a video on dividing fractions using the manipulatives method.

My test corrections:

My first mistake was on the question.. Tamar had 1/2 of an apple pie in her refrigerator. She ate 1/4 of this piece of pie. What fraction of a whole pie did she eat?
Instead of multiplying, I divided.

The right answer is 1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8

My second mistake was on the first question on the bottom part. I did everthing right except for the question. I used the question... How many groups of 1/2 goes into 5/6?

The actual answer is... What is 5/6 groups of 1/2?

Jessica T's Fraction Scribepost

Today is class we learned about multiplying fractions, I did the first half of questions and Mae did the second half. Well here are some of the questions
Oh and I apologize in advance if you can't see my pictures.

In order to solve this question you will need to follow the steps..

Step 1: Use the "elevator" method, which is using reciprocals, If you don't know what that is, here's a website that will explain what they are.

Step 2: You multiply the second fraction to make one, to do that you need to use reciprocals.

Step 3: Whatever you multiply to the bottom you also have to do to the top!

Step 4: You then multiply those numbers and you should be able to get your answer.

Step 5: You also can estimate if your answer is going to be  greater than 1 or less than 1. If your top fraction is greater than your bottom fraction then your answer if going to be greater than 1, but if your bottom fraction is greater than your top fraction then it's probably less than one.

For this question you repeat the same steps as above BUT there's one more step to this.

The extra step is to change the mixed number into a improper fraction.

If you still don't understand, Here's a video that might help you, This website might help also!

My test corrections

In the test I forgot to write the word question and I didn't know how to draw the pictures but now I do! hope my pictures could help!

Jira's Pay it Forward

Part 1

What is "Pay it Forward"
  - it is used to describe people who are doing good deeds for another three or more people. Also helping another three or more people in exchange except giving awards. A concept that involves doing something good for someone in response to a good deed done on your behalf or a gift you received. But, when you pay it forward, you don't repay the person who did something nice for you. Instead, you do something nice for someone else. For example, if someone changes your tire while you are stranded on the highway, you might pay it forward by shoveling your elderly neighbor's walkway after a snow has fallen.

Part 2:

What was your Pay It Forward act of kindness?
 - My Pay it Forward act of kindness was giving some food to an old man collecting garbage in our backyard.

Why did you choose this activity?
 - I choose this because the man looks really hungry while collecting can and bottles while riding his bicycle made from trash.

Who did you help & What did you do?
  -  I helped an old man and gave him some food because he looks hungry.

When did you do your act of kindness?
 -  I did it when my dad went to the superstore to buy some things, and my sisters in my mom’s work with her.

Part 3:

How did your act of kindness go?
  - it’s nice helping someone for me it went very good.
What Happened?
 - The old man thanked me then leave immediately.
How did you feel?
 - it felt great like i’m so relief or so happy to help the old man.
How did the person or people react?
 - the old man was so hungry and when i gave him the food he’s so happy.
Did you ask the person or people to "Pay It Forward"?
 - i know i should ask him to pay it forward but I kinda “Didn’t”
How did they react to your request?
 - he reacted by smiling and thanking me.
If you did not ask the person to "Pay It Forward" how come?
 - i know i should ask him to pay it forward but he’s so hungry and that’s the person who really needed help, so i just didn’t ask him because i think he didn’t have anything to give!.

Part 4
Why is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
  - The idea of pay it forward is important because it helps people to help others without any return.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
  - my act of kindness made a difference because if someone saw me, they can do it and help others with no return.

Kamilah's Fraction Scribepost

Textbook page 227

When dividing fractions remember to always use Reciprocals.
Reciprocal - a number related to another in such a way that when multiplied together their product is 1.

3. Explain how the diagram shows that the quotient of 3/7 is 1/7 is between 4 and 5.

6. Determine each quotient and use diagram

8. Divide Using Multiplication

Test Corrections

My first mistake was:
1. Tamar had 1/2 of an apple pie in her refrigerator. She ate 1/4 of this piece of pie. What fraction of a whole did she eat? Instead of multiplying it, I subtracted it.

My second mistake was:
2. 1/4 divided by 1/3. I answered it correctly but I didn't know how to draw it.

I apologize if you can't see the pictures.

What we learned today
Getting the common denominator to draw a diagram for dividing fractions.

Homework questions:
2.Mike carried out division 3/4 divided by 2/3 as follows.
3/4 divided by 2/3 = 4/3 x 2/3= 8/9

5.Answer each fraction using a diagram.

7.Answer each fraction by getting the denominator

Here's a video that might help you on dividing fractions with common denominator.

My Test Corrections

My first mistake was on the top section. It was this question:
In computer terminology, a bit is 1/8 of a byte. How many bits equal 16 bytes?
I did this solution:
16/1 x 1/8 = 16/8 or 2
The solution and answer was wrong it's supposed to be:
16/1 divided by 1/8 = 16/1 x 8/1= 128 bits.

My second mistake was:
1 1/2 divided by 2/3
This is what I did:
1 1/2 divided by 2/3= 3/2 x 3/2= 9/2 or 4 1/2
I didn't multiply the denominator 2.
This the correct solution:
1 1/2 divided by 2/3= 3/2 x 3/2 = 9/4 or 2 1/4

My last mistake was in the bottom part.
My question was wrong in the third picture:
I wrote share 1/4 into 1/3 equal groups.
It's supposed to be: How many groups of 1/3 goes into 1/4.
