Multiplying Integers

When you multiply two integers with the same signs the answer is positive.
When you multiply two integers with different signs the answer is negative.

2. To model (-3) x (-5), Raini places 15 zero pairs on her desk.

2a. Why did she use 15 zero pairs?

Answer: She used 15 zero pairs because she modeled it with (-3) x (-5). She modeled it like this:
2b. What should she do next?

Answer: She should take away the negative zero pairs to get her answer. +15
7. Write each multiplication as a repeated addition

7a.  (+3) x (+8) 

Answer: 3 groups of 8 (+8) + (+8) + (+8) = (+24)

7b. (+5) x (-6)

Answer: 5 groups of Negative 6 (-6) + (-6) + (-6) + (-6) + (-6) + (-6) = (-36)

11. What multiplication statement does each set of diagrams represent?

Answer: 3 Negative Zero pairs taken away equals (+6)

Answer: Take away 3 groups of positive 3 equals (-9)

16. A building has 10 stories above ground and 3 stories below ground. Each story has a height of 4m.

16a. What is the total height of the building above ground?

Answer: (+10) x (+4) = (+40)

16b. What is the total depth of the builiding below ground?

Answer: (-3) x (+4) = (-12)

1.) Darcy modeled (+7) x (+3) on a number line by drawing seven arrows. Ishnan modelled (+7) x (+3) on a number line by drawing only three arrows. explain ishnan thinking.

Answer:
Ishnan thinking is wrong because the right answer is positive 21 but if he draw only three arrows the answer will be positive 9.

5.) what multiplication statement does each diagram represent?



The answer is (+2) x (-6)= -12

The answer for this question is (+4) x (+4) = +16


7.) Determine each product.
  a.) (+4) x (-7)   b.) (+2) x (+9)

answers:


A.)  In this question I solve this by using number line. the answer for this question is -28.





B.) In this question i answer this by number line. the answer for this question is -18 because 2 groups of 9 is 18.

4) Jasmine said that she did not need any integer chips to multiply 0 x (+2) or to multiply (-3) x 0. Explain her thinking.

Answer: Jasmine did not need to add any integer chips because there is nothing to multiply it by. Multiplying zero is the same thing as multiply nothing so the answer is zero.

5) Write each repeated addition as a multiplication.

a) (+1) + (+1) + (+1) + (+1) + (+1)
Answer: (+5) x (+1) = (+5)

b) (-6) + (-6)
Answer: (+2) x (-6) = (-12)

9) What multiplication statement does each set of diagrams represent?

18) Does doubling an integer always result in an integer of greater value? Explain.
Answer: No, because when you double a negative integer, the answer or result will be a lesser value.

3. Paolo models (-2) x (+3) as shown in the diagram. He determines the correct product, -6. Explain his method works.
      - his method works because even though he didn't remove the zero pairs, the answer will still be -6.

   b)  (-4) + (-4) + (-4) + (-4)  =  (+4) x (-4)

17. An oil rig is dilling a well at 2m/min. How deep is the well after the first 8 min.

Today in math, we learned how to multiply positive and negative integers. 

These questions are from the sheet that was assigned today.

1. Let's take 3 x 5. This is easy because it's basically like (+3) x (+5) so just simply multiply the two numbers. The answer is 15. If you were to model it using integer chips, it would be like:



To put it in words, it would be 3 groups of 5 are 15.



2. Now let's take (-2) x 7. For this one, you have to first of all multiply the factors, which is 2 x 7 = 14. You have -2 groups with zero pairs 7 times, so then you'd be left with a negative number. Therefore, the answer would be -14. If you were to model this, it would be like:



To put it in words, it would be remove 2 groups of 7.



3. Let's take 2 x (-2). Multiply the factors which is 2 x 2 and the answer would be 4. This one works the same as the last one because we're removing zero pairs, so that means we'll be left with a negative number again. The answer would be -4. If you were to model this, it would be like: 




If you were to put this in words, it would be 2 groups of  -2 are -4.
