Breister's Proportion Post

Part  1

Ratio - Is a comparison of quantities that have the same units. The order of the words in a sentence indicates the order of the number in the ratio. Ratios can be written in several ways.

  • Words: nine circle compared to twelve or 9 to 12.
  • Ratio Notation:  9:12
  • Fraction 9
                       12

Rate  - A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

  • A rate can be expressed as a fraction, but cannot be expressed as a percent.
  • A unit rate is a rate in which the second term is one
  • To compare the cost of similar items a unit price is useful

ProportionIs a relationship that says that 2 ratios or rates are  equal.

Part 2

1.)  5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about _72__km/h.
360 divide by 5 equals equals 72 km. 5 divide by 5 equals 1 so the answer is 72 km/h.2.)  Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned $75 last week.  How     much money did Emma save last week?

28 x 75 = 2100 so she earned about $21.00

Part 3

What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16  or 4/9 = 16/32

On ways is to multiply or divide horizontally.

Ex.   3/4 = 12/16 you can multiply by 4 to equal this answer and
 4/9 = 16/32 too.

Second way is to cross multiply

Third way is dividing vertically

Part 5

We are starting to engage in discussions about social justice. What do you think about this image below. Use the link to copy it into your post. Then answer the questions

  • 1 )Does this seem fair?
  • 2) With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair?
  • 3)Why have you made this choice?
  • 4)What would you have done if you were the judge?

  • Answer

    1) No because a guy stealing 3 billion dollars only got sentence for 3 year and a guy who have no money to feed his self just stole a $100 and got sentence for 15 years. He probably had no choice than to still because he was poor.
    2) This seems not fair in a lot of ways. First a guy just stole $100 and got sentence to jail for 15 years and the other guy for stilling a 3 billion dollar and only got sentence for only 3 years. It was like this the guy who stole 3 billion and got sentence for only 3 years and 4 month, or in fraction it would be $3 billion and 3.4 years, 3 billion divide by 787 days equals to $ 3 811 944.09/ day. That is how much he had stole if the sentence was only for a day. The homeless guy stole $100 and got sentence for 15 years, 100 divide by 15 equals to $0.01 or one cent/ day. If you compare how much they have stole for a day it would be the guy whole stole 3 billion would be  $3 811 844.09 and the homeless guy is $0.01, the different is way up.
    3) I had made this choice because stilling $100 and get sentence for 15 years and someone who stole 3 billion dollar got sentence for only 3 years this thing looks wrong in a lot of ways and I feel sorry for the guy a lot.
    4) If I was the judge I would sentence the guy who stole 3 billion dollars about 30 years and the guy who stole only a hundred dollar I would sentence him only in a month, because he did do something wrong and he need to learn not to do it again.

    Bonus Question

    The kid in the woods

    IMG_4416

How tall is the trees in the forest?

By knowing his age and he looks about 14 years old and the average 14 years old is the size of 5'3. Then I stack him up until its the same height of the tree and if I stack about 3 of him it would equal to 5.3 x 3 = 47.7 cm. The tree height is 47.7 cm.

    1. I did good at setting up my post set up, at the social justice part and for the part 1 definition. I wish I could have done better of having a better picture, explaining it simpler, and to make a better post.
