Jessie's Proportion Post

Part 1

  • Ratio- Pair of numbers that compares different type of units. Ex. Part-to-part: Two oranges to three bananas 2:3         Part-to-whole: Two cars to total cars 2:10
  • Rate- Compares two quantities measured in different units. Ex. Three cookies for Four dollars 3 cookies/ $4.00              Unit Rate: Unit=1     Two cookies for One dollar     2 cookies/$1
Proportion- Is an equation that shows that two ratios are equal to each other. Ex. 3 cars were sold in 5 hours. How many cars will be sold in 15 hours?     c:h    3:5  x  3  =  9:15

Part 2

  • 5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about _____km/h.
  • 5:360  /  5   =   1:72

  • Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned $75 last week.  How much money did Emma save last week?
  •  28 times 75 = 2100 she earned   $2.10 cents

    Part 3
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
    3/4 = 12/16  or 4/9 = 16/32
    1)Cross, Horizontal, and Vertical Multiplication
    2)3 x 4 is 12 and 4 x 4 is 16 (Vertical Multiply)
    3)4/9 is not equivalent

    Part 5

    1. Does this seem fair?
    2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above.  Does it seem just and fair?
    3. Why have you made this choice?
         4.    What would you have done if you were the judge?

    1. No, because he was desperate and he even surrendered himself to the police. He doesn't deserve 15 years. He at least deserves community service

    2. No. It doesn't.

    3. He's homeless and probably has no family to turn to.

    4. Give him a reasonable sentence of 6 months of community service.
